In Which Daniel Craig and Judi Dench are Awesome

What happens when Daniel Craig and Judi Dench collaborate to make a public service announcement about gender inequality, which includes Craig dressing in hosiery, heels, a dress, wig, and earrings?

Chilling awesomeness happens.

Then again, Craig was the butt of a shitstorm of jokes when he was announced as the New Bond, because he wasn’t “manly” enough for the role. Evidently, being short/having sensitive skin*/not driving a stick/not caring for guns meant that he was a “wuss”. It’s great to see an actor known for playing a traditionally hyper-masculine role spend his time and energy making a great point about sexism.

And Judi Dench needs to narrate everything. All the time.

Since Daniel Craig’s appearance in a dress elicited much inevitable transphobia (from chauvinists over the internet forums), it’s a pity that the vid – amongst it’s long list of shocking statistics about the damage caused by gender oppression – didn’t *dare* to mention the fact that statisically the group of women most likely to be assaulted and murdered are transwomen. Guess that wouldn’t have gone down to well with the self-style ‘mainstream’/respectable people though. As the video says: “we’ve” got a long way to go as far as equality goes yet.

  • Schmoe says:

If women are paid less for the same job, why do companies hire any men at all? Are we equals? Maybe men are just better at the jobs.

    • Bonnie says:

Your screen name is correct–you are a schmoe, making a statement like that.

Have you ever heard of the concept of “institutional sexism”?

  • Hell Cat says:

I saw this on another community I watch and I got chills. Not from Craig, but the pure horrifying numbers and composed grace of Dench’s voice. There was no cutesy woobie voice delivering it, to dumb it down and make it a little less significant. No. It was a strong woman’s voice proclaiming the injustices aren’t right and we can’t forget in the act of complacency. It was a reminder that equality isn’t just about the numbers. It’s about remembering the humanity in giving women the same courtesy as men. That one isn’t better than the other and that people should be equal, no matter the gender, because ultimately it’s about the actions, not how one cops a squat.
